…aka, the extended bio.
My name is Michelle Collins. (@emceecollins on Twitter and Instagram) I enjoy candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach…
Actually, that’s not true. I’d rather eat at a greasy burger joint and I prefer snow over sand. This is me.
I should probably find a more flattering picture, but I’m going with “mug shot” for now. Here’s a little more about myself.
I lived most of my life in the South, but I spent part of 2015-16 in Las Vegas. Pretty Dauntless, right? I’ve been an Elementary teacher, but now I’m a substitute and part time Interpreter at a historic museum. That just means I get to dress up like Laura Ingalls Wilder and talk about life in 1820s Arkansas sometimes.
I write YA because that’s where my natural voice is, even though I passed YA some time ago. I’ve dabbled in Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and contemporary, all of which included a heavy dose of romance. Because: kissing. I LOVE writing romance scenes.
Like most writers, I was a reader first. I enjoy all kinds of books and stick mostly to YA. Genre doesn’t really matter. I read them all. Including–and I don’t care what anyone says because I love it– dystopian fiction. There are a lot of us still out here.
We’re the ones you’ll want on your side in the Zombie Apocalypse.
My favorite books through the years are: A Wrinkle in Time, Brave New World, The Giver, Slaughterhouse Five, The Outsiders, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Stand, The Uglies series, Divergent, and all of the Harry Potter books. And now I am adding The Raven Cycle books by Maggie Stiefvater because I just finished them and my life will never be the same.
I’ve been a card-carrying Sci-Fi geek for as long as I have been able to comprehend what that means. (My Return of the Jedi collector cards say so.) My fave Sci-Fi (non-book) things are Doctor Who, Fringe, Firefly, Haven, Star Trek, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
And like all geeks, I have preferences. Here’s where I come down on the important television issues: Next Gen over Original. Ten over Eleven and Twelve. Spike over Angel. Jon Snow over all those other pretty people. And Daryl Dixon over everyone else on the planet.
My taste in movies is decidedly less Sci-Fi and more cerebral. For instance, this is the greatest movie ever conceived, written, and acted. That’s a mathematical fact.
If you don’t recognize that scene from Good Will Hunting, you need to leave now and go watch that movie. I’ll be here waiting with tissues.
See? Told you. Now go watch The Good Shepherd, The Martian and The Departed and come back. There will be a place waiting for you in #Damonation.
I dislike bananas, coffee, and Nicholas Cage.
I like pork rinds, the end of Allegiant, and Keanu Reeves.
As you can see, I tend to go against the grain.
My obsessions include: Diet Coke, boy bands, and the weather
If I had three wishes, I’d wish for the imagination of JK Rowling, the dialogue wizardry of Joss Whedon, and the cojones of The 100 Tv writers.
And if I could talk you into supporting just one cause in the world, it would be water.org
ABOUT MY WORK:
I’m currently querying LETH5L: DEEP CUTS, a YA contemporary adventure about the world’s biggest boy band, who also happen to be assassin spies working for the Special Intelligence Network for Global Espionage, Recon & Security. (Think: One Direction meets James Bond meets Zoolander.) When “The Cute One” is forced to take a new drug called Rewind to protect his cover, he rewinds and “meets” the mother who abandoned him as a baby. Now not only does he have a mission to complete, but he’s got one mother of a mother issue.
My YA manuscript, BETWEEN SOUND AND SILENCE, is set on board The Mayflower space station, where Honor has been born with extrasensory hearing and her twin has an even more unusual “gift.” They try to stay under the radar but things get complicated when straight-laced, rules-following Honor meets an Earth-born rebel with the gift for song, who thinks rules are just suggestions. Complete with two original songs. If The 100 were to have a musical episode, this manuscript would be it.
My other complete YA manuscript, EVERGREEN, is character driven with a lot of action and has a high swoony factor. Set during the Vaccine War in the realistic (actually possible) future. It combines the Sci-Fi of Frankenstein with the romance of Romeo & Juliet. Frankie is a regenerated “Gennie” soldier. GeroVitam Corp saved her life, but couldn’t find a way to regenerate the feeling in her skin too. She spends her time trying to remember what someone’s touch feels like. When the “Nat” enemy she’s guarding accidentally grabs her hand to keep her from falling and she feels his touch, she’s forced to decide if she’ll follow orders like a good Gennie soldier, or follow her heart.

That’s the condensed version of my life and times.
So long and thanks for all the fish!
